Legendary Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey began his work with the Aston Martin team on Monday.

Newey, recognized as the most successful car designer in Formula 1 history, has become part of Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll’s ambitious Formula 1 project.

Stroll aims to transform Aston Martin into a contender for the championship, especially with the introduction of new regulations for engines and aerodynamics in the 2026 season.

Newey has taken on the newly created position of managing technical partner, where he will be leading next year’s project. He has also become a shareholder in the team.

Throughout his career, Newey has designed championship-winning cars for Williams and McLaren in the 1990s, as well as for Red Bull in two separate periods over the last two decades.

‘I’m looking forward to it, and what will be, will be,’ Newey mentioned on the BBC F1: Back at Base podcast.

‘The primary goal is to get acquainted with everyone here, understand their working methods, and integrate myself into the team.’

‘This involves conversations with the drivers and fellow engineers, exchanging ideas to initiate a creative flow.’

Fernando Alonso described Aston Martin as ‘the team of the future’ with Newey joining.

New Group CEO and team principal Andy Cowell, another recent addition who previously oversaw Mercedes’ dominant engine development from 2014 to 2021, believes Newey’s arrival will provide a significant boost.

‘Everyone is extremely excited to collaborate with Adrian,’ Andy Cowell stated in Bahrain. ‘His track record is undeniable. We are eager to welcome him to our facilities.’

‘We are beginning the process of introducing him to key technical personnel within our organization, demonstrating our engineering tools, and then diving into the creation of the 2026 car and contributing to improvements for 2025.’

Before joining Aston Martin, Newey was on gardening leave after departing from Red Bull.

Aston Martin is still awaiting confirmation on the start date for Enrico Cardile, Ferrari’s former head of engine department.

Aston Martin announced Cardile’s recruitment last July for 2025, but an agreement with Ferrari regarding his starting date has yet to be reached.
