Claressa Shields is now allowed to box again after the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission lifted her suspension.
The suspension was imposed after the multi-division world champion tested positive for marijuana following her victory over Danielle Perkins on February 3 in Michigan. The test was from an ‘oral fluid sample’.
Marijuana is considered a banned substance in competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
With the suspension now over, Shields can return to boxing, although she might still face some further ‘enforcement action’.
Her promoter, Dmitry Salita, stated to Sky Sports that Claressa Shields is a clean athlete with a historic career, from Olympic champion to world champion in multiple weight classes.
He added that she has always been committed to the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and excellence in boxing.
Salita also mentioned that Claressa Shields is a disciplined and dedicated professional athlete. They are happy that the situation is resolved and her name is cleared.
He concluded by saying that Shields is focused on continuing her career, making history, and further promoting women’s boxing.
Shields expressed her relief on social media, stating she is officially unsuspended. She noted the earlier criticism about the marijuana test and affirmed her status as undisputed heavyweight champion.
