Trainer Rob McCracken suggests that Lauren Price has the potential to become the Oleksandr Usyk of women’s boxing.
Like Usyk, Price is an Olympic gold medalist and has also won European and World gold medals as an international amateur.
Moving up from welterweight and achieving Olympic gold and other middleweight accolades demonstrates Price’s ability to progress through different weight classes.
Usyk is a prime example of this, having become undisputed champion at both cruiserweight and heavyweight as a professional.
Price is in the early stages of her professional career but is already the WBA welterweight world titleholder. Her goal is to become the undisputed champion at 147lbs by the end of this year.
The first crucial step towards this goal is her unification fight against Natasha Jonas for the WBA, IBF, and WBC titles at the Royal Albert Hall on Friday, March 7, live on television.
‘Potentially, potentially yes,’ McCracken told media when asked if she could become the Oleksandr Usyk of women’s boxing.
McCracken is a highly experienced coach who has guided Carl Froch and Anthony Joshua to the pinnacle of professional boxing and achieved unprecedented Olympic success as performance director for GB Boxing.
He commented on Price: ‘So potentially [the Usyk of women’s boxing]. She still has some work to do! But she has a long career ahead to achieve that.’
‘She’s an exceptional talent. She proved it by winning every amateur boxing accolade worldwide, not just in the UK.’
‘She won every tournament: Worlds, Europeans, Olympics, everything. She’s a genuine talent and a very good boxer with a lot of progress ahead.’
‘She’s confident and naturally gifted. She has real skill, real ability, and she’s physically strong too.’
