World No. 6 Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev has commented on the unpleasant incident that occurred during his quarterfinal match at the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai, UAE, against Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor.

Following the second set, which Medvedev lost in a tie-break, the Russian player had a heated exchange with umpire Adel Nour.

Medvedev’s dissatisfaction stemmed from a code violation warning for unsportsmanlike conduct. Daniil accused the umpire of double standards, claiming biased treatment towards Russian players. After the match, Medvedev demonstratively refused to shake hands with Nour.

The match concluded with Griekspoor winning with a score of 2-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5.

“I definitely went too far, of course. We talked after the match. I’ve known this umpire for a long time, and it’s not even about him. All umpires in the ATP tour absolutely don’t care where you’re from, who you are. They are just trying to do their job as best as possible. Understandably, someone will always be unhappy, so I just said it off the top of my head.”

“We talked, I apologized. I said that I honestly don’t remember everything I said, it’s true. And I’m not sure if there was anything where I said something directly offensive, but if there was, I apologized for it. I respect him as an umpire,” Medvedev stated.

At the same time, the Russian player declined to specify what triggered such a negative reaction.
