The Formula 1 community has come together to pay tribute to Eddie Jordan, a true legend, following the news of the former team owner’s passing at the age of 76.

Earlier on Thursday, Jordan’s family announced that the much-loved Irish entrepreneur, known for giving Michael Schumacher his start in Formula 1, had succumbed to cancer.

As the news spread through the paddock ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, heartfelt messages of admiration flooded social media from drivers and teams alike.

George Russell of Mercedes expressed his sadness, calling it ‘a very sad day’ and acknowledging the loss of ‘a true legend with a unique voice in the sport.’ He extended his condolences to Jordan’s family and friends, emphasizing that Jordan’s impact would always be remembered and that the weekend’s race would be dedicated to him.

Carlos Sainz, formerly of Ferrari and McLaren and now with Williams, shared his sorrow upon learning of Eddie Jordan’s death, describing him as ‘a true icon and loved character’ in Formula 1. He remembered Jordan as ‘passionate, loyal, and truly one of a kind,’ adding that he would be deeply missed and sending his respects.

Esteban Ocon of Haas also expressed his personal connection, stating he was ‘lucky enough to know Eddie.’ He remembered him as ‘a great character of our sport and an even better person,’ offering his thoughts to Jordan’s family and friends.

Eddie Jordan was a prominent figure in Formula 1, initially as the owner of the Jordan team from 1991, where he famously gave Michael Schumacher his debut. He later became a respected television pundit. Jordan sold his team in 2005 due to financial challenges.

The Jordan team, after several ownership and name changes, now competes as Aston Martin.

While Michael Schumacher was quickly recruited by Benetton from Jordan, Damon Hill achieved success with Jordan, winning a race in 1998. The team reached its peak in 1999, finishing third in the constructors’ championship and securing four race wins overall.

Flavio Briatore, former Benetton team principal now at Alpine, conveyed his deep sadness at the loss of Eddie Jordan, remembering him as ‘a great individual’ who consistently brought joy to the Formula 1 paddock for many years. He cherished the memories shared with Jordan both on and off the track, noting that his presence would be profoundly missed throughout the Formula 1 world.

Lawrence Stroll, owner of Aston Martin, remembered Eddie Jordan as ‘a true racer, a great leader, and one of the most significant personalities in our sport.’ He expressed personal loss, stating, ‘He was a friend of over thirty years, and I will miss him greatly.’

Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, stated that ‘All at McLaren are deeply saddened’ by the news. He described Jordan as ‘a vibrant figure’ known for his passionate nature. Brown emphasized Jordan’s ‘enormous passion for Formula 1’ and the ‘incredible legacy’ he leaves behind.

Christian Horner shared his memories on Instagram, recalling meeting Eddie Jordan in 1991 when he was a young driver. He quoted Jordan’s advice, ‘get a good sponsor … welcome to the Piranha Club!’ Horner acknowledged Jordan’s vibrant personality and their interactions in Formula 1, praising his energy and enjoyable nature to work with even after Jordan transitioned to other ventures.

Horner concluded that ‘Formula 1 has lost a legend,’ expressing that Jordan’s ‘wit and his Irish charm will be missed.’

James Vowles, Williams’ team principal, added his deep sadness, describing Eddie Jordan as ‘a larger than life character’ who positively impacted the sport. He admired Jordan as ‘a fantastic independent leader, who worked amongst giants of the sport.’
