Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios, Wimbledon finalist in 2022, shared his thoughts after reaching the second round of the Miami Masters in the USA. He defeated American Mackenzie McDonald in his opening match with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
This win marks Kyrgios’s first victory since October 2022. He is set to face Russian player Karen Khachanov in the next round.
"To be honest, I had almost accepted that my tennis career was over. It really felt like it was heading that way. I shared my doubts with my coaches and team, the people who sacrifice their time for me. I told them, ‘I’m not sure how much longer I can keep going.’ This win definitely gives me energy, but it’s important to stay realistic. Tomorrow will show how my wrist reacts. The conditions here are really challenging."
"When I saw the tournament draw, I wasn’t confident in my abilities. My wrist has been causing me a lot of problems for the last six months. But maybe my previous win against McDonald gave me the experience I needed. He’s a very strong and awkward opponent. His game surprised me; I’m not used to that ball speed anymore. I worked incredibly hard just to get on the court, and I doubted whether I could even finish the match. But the victory, the feeling of being back in the game – it’s something special," Kyrgios said after the match.
