Following the Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma addressed retirement rumors, clarifying his commitment to ODI cricket. Despite stepping back from T20Is and questions surrounding his Test future, Sharma has his sights set on the 2027 World Cup co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Sharma, a celebrated ODI player, emphasizes his focus on this format. His continued run-scoring would negate age concerns as India approaches the next major tournament. While prioritizing ODIs, Sharma hasn’t dismissed Test cricket, having been a consistent Test performer for India, barring a couple of series.
His notable Test performance includes a century against England in 2021. Although Jasprit Bumrah has demonstrated leadership in Tests, Rohit remains a highly respected figure in the Indian team setup.
Considering Bumrah’s fitness and the team’s intention to further develop Shubman Gill as a future leader, Rohit is seen as the ideal captain to guide India through this transitional period. Virat Kohli acknowledged the team’s strong core for the coming years, highlighting the importance of a smooth leadership handover when the time comes.
The question remains whether Rohit will continue in Test cricket in the new World Test Championship cycle, beginning with the England series in June. If he focuses solely on ODIs, he could play a maximum of 27 international ODI matches leading up to the February-March World Cup, supplemented by IPL and domestic Vijay Hazare Trophy games.
Should Sharma not play Tests in England, his international ODI schedule would consist of nine series of three matches each over two years, against teams including Bangladesh, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, England, Afghanistan, West Indies, and Sri Lanka. Fitness will be a key consideration moving forward.
While retirement decisions are personal, there’s a counter-argument about whether selectors or the BCCI might prefer to transition to younger players, potentially choosing between Rohit and Virat in the ODI team. Yashasvi Jaiswal, with impressive List A stats, is a strong contender waiting for opportunity.
If Jaiswal is considered for the 2027 World Cup, he would need substantial game time in the lead-up. Selectors often ensure potential global tournament players get around 25 matches before the event. The roles of chief selector Ajit Agarkar and coach Gautam Gambhir will be crucial in balancing experience with youth. However, a former selector suggests that decisions on senior players like Kohli and Rohit ultimately rest with top BCCI officials.
