In a cricket tournament celebrated for explosive batting, the significance of bowlers in securing victory is increasingly evident. The upcoming IPL season will be no exception. Examining the bowling squads of the IPL teams, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, and Sunrisers Hyderabad stand out with particularly well-rounded lineups. The Impact Player Rule has diminished the role of all-rounders, leading teams to favor five specialist bowlers, with some even opting for a sixth when defending a high score.

What makes Kolkata Knight Riders’ bowling special? Harshit Rana offers a valuable Indian fast bowling option, capable of taking wickets with pace and bounce. He is complemented by Varun Chakravarthy, a proven T20 performer for India. Adding Anrich Nortje’s express pace and Sunil Narine’s spin mastery, KKR’s bowling for 16 overs looks formidable on most occasions. Young Vaibhav Arora impressed last season, and Andre Russell can contribute with an over or two. KKR’s home games at Eden Gardens should see this attack be especially effective.

Ramandeep Singh and Venkatesh Iyer can also provide bowling support as needed. If Nortje underperforms, Spencer Johnson offers a tall left-arm option. On spin-friendly pitches like Chennai, Moeen Ali’s off-spin could also prove useful. KKR appears to possess the strongest bowling unit on paper.

Mumbai Indians, despite recent underwhelming seasons, have maintained their core bowling group. Captain Hardik Pandya is a genuine bowler who can influence matches with sharp fast bowling spells. MI’s success will depend on their bowling performance until Jasprit Bumrah’s expected arrival in April.

Momentum in IPL shifts quickly, and a fit Deepak Chahar can be dangerous with his swing bowling in the powerplay. Trent Boult provides excellent support, swinging the ball back into right-handers early in the innings. Mitchell Santner is adept in Indian conditions, though MI might have wished for stronger Indian spin options beyond Karn Sharma. Once Bumrah joins, Mumbai’s bowling will be a major threat.

For Sunrisers Hyderabad, the challenge for bowlers is adapting to the typically flat Uppal pitch. However, Pat Cummins and Mohammed Shami are experienced and intelligent bowlers capable of making an impact if the batting lineup sets a high target. The third Indian pacer might be a weaker link, but Harshal Patel is a capable death overs bowler despite a higher economy rate. While Adam Zampa offers wrist spin, consistently including him across conditions might be difficult. Rahul Chahar and Abhishek Sharma’s slow bowling will be valuable in such situations.

Gujarat Titans, under Ashish Nehra, also boast a strong bowling attack, featuring Rashid Khan, a world-class T20 bowler, alongside Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna. R Sai Kishore and Washington Sundar will support Rashid in the spin department.

Rajasthan Royals possess a superior spin attack with either Wanindu Hasaranga or Maheesh Theeksana likely to play. Riyan Parag’s off-breaks are also useful. However, the pace bowling might rely heavily on Jofra Archer, requiring more support from Indian bowlers. Sandeep Sharma is effective in specific conditions, and Ashok Sharma, a young fast bowler, is one to watch.

Chennai Super Kings’ bowling, apart from Matheesha Pathirana and R Ashwin, appears less inspiring. Mukesh Chaudhary showed promise in previous seasons, and Anshul Kamboj is decent, but their consistency is questionable. Khaleel Ahmed, despite extensive experience, has not consistently earned teams’ trust in death overs, except for a notable season with Delhi Capitals.

Lucknow Super Giants invested in Mayank Yadav’s pace, but his availability remains uncertain. While their batting is strong, the bowling unit seems somewhat inexperienced.

For Delhi Capitals, Axar Patel, Mitchell Starc, and Kuldeep Yadav cover 12 overs, but Starc’s T20 inconsistency is a concern. However, T Natarajan and Mukesh Kumar offer death bowling variations that could excite DC fans, capable of bowling crucial wide yorkers.
