Jade Jones, a celebrated double Olympic champion, has declared her departure from taekwondo to pursue a professional boxing career.

Jones achieved significant success in taekwondo, securing gold medals in the 57kg weight class at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games. Her accomplishments also include the 2019 world championship title and three European championship victories in the same discipline.

At the age of 31, Jones participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics but experienced an unexpected defeat in the first round against Miljana Reljikj of North Macedonia.

Jones: Boxing Always Captivated Me

Jones commented, “Taekwondo has been incredibly rewarding, providing me with an amazing journey, cherished memories, and the privilege to represent my nation at the highest level.”

She added, “Having dedicated myself completely to taekwondo, I am now eager for a fresh challenge. Boxing has always intrigued me, and I am enthusiastic about testing my capabilities in a completely new competitive environment.”

“I am aware that this transition will be demanding, and to be frank, I am uncertain of what lies ahead. However, I thrive on pushing my boundaries and am excited about this new chapter.”

Stephen Smith, her new trainer, stated, “Jade is a natural fighter, consistently demonstrating this throughout her taekwondo career.”

He further noted, “Her exceptional athleticism, unwavering dedication, and winning attitude are unparalleled. It is an honor to train her, and I am confident she possesses the necessary attributes to make a significant impact in the boxing world.”

Leading up to her fourth Olympic appearance in Paris, Jones faced controversy due to a missed drug test in December. However, she avoided a ban after UK Anti-Doping determined it was a no-fault violation due to confidential medical reasons.
