The Lord’s Cricket Ground in London is set to host the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final between Australia and South Africa from June 11-15. Initially expecting high revenue due to anticipated strong demand from Indian fans, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) now faces potential losses of up to 4 million pounds (approximately Rs 45.08 crore). This financial impact stems from India’s failure to reach the final after their series defeat against Australia.

A report indicated that MCC had initially set premium ticket prices, banking on India’s participation. The absence of India, a major draw in global cricket, has led to a significant reduction in expected financial gains. This highlights the considerable financial influence of Indian cricket.

In response to lower than expected demand, MCC has reduced ticket prices by around 50 pounds (approximately Rs 5633) per ticket. This decision aims to attract a larger crowd and ensure a vibrant atmosphere at the venue, prioritizing stadium occupancy over maximizing revenue per ticket.

The report further explained that Lord’s decided to adjust ticket prices for the WTC final this year, offering them between 40 and 90 pounds – about 50 pounds cheaper than originally planned. This price adjustment reflects the anticipated revenue decrease.

Lord’s is also scheduled to host a Test match between India and England in July, for which the first four days are already sold out.

India’s path to the WTC final was disrupted by consecutive series defeats.

The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team suffered a surprising 0-3 defeat at home against New Zealand, marking their first home series loss since 2012-13. Adding to their setbacks, India was defeated by Australia (1-3) in a Test series in Australia.
