The highly anticipated rematch between Mikaela Mayer and Sandy Ryan for the WBO welterweight world title will be broadcast live on Sky Sports. Boxing fans can catch the action from Las Vegas.
Mayer is set to defend her WBO welterweight title in a second fight against former champion Sandy Ryan. The event will take place at the Bleaulive Theater in Fontainebleau Las Vegas, a large, customizable venue. UK viewers can watch live in the early hours of March 30 on Sky.
Tensions escalated between Mayer and Ryan leading up to their first fight last September. Mayer accused Ryan of taking her trainer, while Ryan claimed Mayer’s team was behind a paint incident at the fight hotel in New York City, which Mayer denies.
In their previous match, Mayer won against Ryan by majority decision, but their rivalry continues.
In other boxing news, Natasha Jonas and Lauren Price will compete for three major world title belts at the Royal Albert Hall. This fight will also be broadcast live on Sky Sports, starting at 7pm on Friday night.
Mayer mentioned that she will be watching the Jonas vs Price fight, as she plans to challenge the winner.
Mayer, an Olympian from 2016, turned professional in 2017. She quickly rose in the super-lightweight division, winning both the IBF and WBO world titles.
Despite a close split decision loss to WBC champion Alycia Baumgardner in October 2022, Mayer moved to lightweight and won the WBC Interim belt against Lucy Wildheart in April of the following year. After a victory over Silvia Bortot, she faced Natasha Jonas for the IBF strap but lost another split decision in a hard-fought battle.
Mayer then focused on Ryan and the WBO belt, successfully becoming a champion in two weight divisions.
Ryan stated that despite past events in New York, she is looking forward to fighting in the US again. She highlighted her history-making fights and the opportunity to compete in Las Vegas, the fight capital of the world.
Ryan believes she will be better prepared this time. While not making excuses, she admitted fighting with anger in their last match due to pre-fight incidents affected her performance, though she acknowledged it was still a great fight.
She emphasized the rematch is crucial for both fighters and highly anticipated by fans. Ryan declared she will be focused, determined, in top condition, and ready to reclaim her world title.
The undercard will feature Brian Norman Jr. defending his WBO welterweight world championship against Derrieck Cuevas from Puerto Rico.
Also, rising featherweight boxer Bruce ‘Shu Shu’ Carrington will face Jose Enrique Vivas in a 10-round WBC final eliminator.
Bob Arum, chairman of Top Rank, described the Mayer-Ryan rivalry as one of the most intense recently, with both fighters eager to settle it definitively. He also expressed confidence in Brian Norman Jr. for his title defense and noted Bruce Carrington’s opportunity to move closer to a world title shot.
Don’t miss Natasha Jonas versus Lauren Price live from the Royal Albert Hall on Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports+, or Sky Showcase, starting at 7pm on Friday.
