Initially, Pakistan players were part of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Prominent Pakistani cricketers like Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi, Sohail Tanvir, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal, and Mohammad Hafeez played in the inaugural season. However, after the Mumbai terror attacks, Pakistani players were banned from participating in the IPL. While some Pakistani individuals served as mentors, no players from Pakistan have played in the league since. Now, experienced Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir has announced his eligibility to play in the IPL starting next year.
Amir’s wife, Narjis, holds UK citizenship, and Amir, having represented Pakistan in 36 Tests, 61 ODIs, and 62 T20Is, is anticipating receiving a UK passport.
“By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL, and if the chance arises, I will definitely take it. I am willing to play in the IPL,” Mohammad Amir stated in an interview.
Ahmed Shehzad, also a participant in the interview, commented that Amir would be a valuable addition to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team and could contribute to them winning their first IPL title.
“RCB needs a bowler of Amir’s caliber to address their bowling concerns. While they possess a strong batting lineup, their bowling has consistently been a weak point. If Amir joins RCB, they have a good chance of winning the title,” Shehzad added.
Amir has delivered several memorable performances against India. Notably, former Indian captain Virat Kohli once gifted him a bat.
“Virat gifted me his bat, and I was deeply touched by his gesture,” Amir recalled. “I have always admired his batting, and he appreciates my bowling. I have played some good innings using the bat he gifted.”
