Natasha Jonas and her coach Joe Gallagher are facing tough challenges both in boxing and in life.
Gallagher is currently training Jonas for a significant world title unification fight against Lauren Price. This important match is scheduled for this Friday at the Royal Albert Hall.
Leading up to this championship fight, which will take place on March 7, Gallagher shared that he has been diagnosed with stage four bowel and liver cancer.
‘I made a public statement because I want people to be aware,’ Gallagher told Sky Sports. ‘My main message is for everyone to get themselves checked and not delay seeking medical advice.’
‘Last year, many people thought I was enjoying a fantastic life. They saw me at dinners with famous figures and involved in big boxing events, thinking everything was perfect. However, it was during a routine medical check-up that this diagnosis came to light.’
Gallagher is committed to maintaining focus in the gym, prioritizing his boxers and their success.
‘It’s business as usual. Nothing has changed,’ he stated. ‘I’ve told my fighters they need to concentrate. We have fights to win this year, both in boxing and in our personal lives, and that’s exactly what we are determined to do.’
He has been carefully planning his chemotherapy treatments around the schedules of his fighters’ upcoming matches.
‘Boxing is his escape, keeping his mind sharp and focused,’ Jonas explained to Sky Sports. ‘If you were to visit our gym, you wouldn’t notice anything different. He’s still coaching me just as intensely as always.’
‘Joe is consistent. He always puts others first and is as invested in your success as you are.’
‘There’s added motivation now,’ she added. ‘It’s understood. There’s extra reason for me to perform well and do justice to my team, and especially to my coach.’
