Following a batting collapse against India’s spin bowlers in their previous match, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner acknowledged the challenges faced by his team. However, Santner is optimistic that the pitch conditions at the Gaddafi Stadium for their upcoming semi-final clash against South Africa will be more favorable for batting and less conducive to spin bowling compared to the Dubai track.
The 2025 Champions Trophy semi-final is highly anticipated as both New Zealand and South Africa aim for their first major ICC limited-overs tournament victory. South Africa enters the match with two wins and one no result, while New Zealand secured their semi-final spot as Group A runners-up after impressive wins against Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Santner addressed the spin threat posed by South Africa’s quality spinners Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi.
“South Africa is a well-rounded team with strengths in all departments. They have recently favored a four-seamer approach, which might be suitable for Lahore’s conditions, likely offering less spin than Dubai. We are aware of Keshav Maharaj’s consistent quality and Shamsi’s presence, along with Markram’s useful spin bowling,” Santner commented during the pre-match press conference.
“We anticipate less spin in Lahore compared to Dubai, which we believe will benefit our batsmen,” he added.
New Zealand has consistently performed well in ICC tournaments over the past decade, reaching the finals of the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups and the semi-finals of the 2023 edition.
Despite their strong record, New Zealand is still seeking a breakthrough victory in a major tournament. When questioned about overcoming this hurdle, Santner acknowledged the difficulty, stating it’s a major challenge in a high-stakes game between two strong teams.
“Reaching the semi-finals was our initial目标. We’ve prepared well and played good cricket. We recognize South Africa’s strength and their consistent performance in such tournaments. It will be a tough contest, but we are confident in our preparations and recent form. While the conditions against India were very different, we have experience playing in Lahore. Ultimately, it will depend on which team performs best on the day,” Santner concluded.
