Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has raised concerns about the selection of all-rounder Shadab Khan in the national T20 team. Afridi stated that Pakistan cricket is currently struggling due to poor decision-making.
Afridi questioned the reasons for Shadab Khan’s return to the T20 squad, especially since he had been out of favor since the last T20 World Cup. Shadab was not only recalled but also appointed vice-captain for the series against New Zealand.
During a media interaction, Afridi asked, “On what basis has he been recalled? What are his performances in domestic cricket or anything else that led to his selection again?”
The former all-rounder emphasized that improvements in Pakistan cricket will only occur when decisions are made based on merit. He believes that the current state of Pakistan cricket, which he describes as being in the ICU, is a result of incorrect decisions.
Afridi pointed out the lack of consistency within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He mentioned that with each new Chairman, there are widespread changes in policies and decisions. He criticized the constant changes in captaincy, coaching staff, and players, questioning the accountability of PCB officials.
He also expressed his disappointment with coaches blaming players to protect their jobs and managements blaming both players and coaches to secure their positions. Afridi questioned how Pakistan cricket can progress in such an environment of instability and blame-shifting.
Regarding the new PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Afridi acknowledged him as a positive individual. However, he noted that Naqvi might lack deep knowledge of cricket. Afridi advised Naqvi to focus solely on his role as PCB Chairman, as it is a full-time commitment, rather than trying to handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
