Rohit Sharma’s captaincy was a key factor in India’s successful Champions Trophy campaign, culminating in a four-wicket victory against New Zealand in the Dubai final. Throughout the tournament, Sharma demonstrated strong leadership, effectively managing the team even under pressure. His unwavering support for each player was particularly evident, especially his consistent backing of spinner Kuldeep Yadav, which lasted until the final match.
Despite some inconsistent performances leading up to the final, Kuldeep Yadav delivered in the crucial game, taking the important wickets of in-form New Zealand batsmen Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson.
Sharma was quick to commend Yadav for his performance. However, it’s noted that Yadav sometimes faced Sharma’s displeasure when the team wasn’t performing as expected.
During the medal ceremony, a moment was captured where Sharma intently watched Yadav struggling with his Champions Trophy blazer. As Sharma was next in line to receive his blazer, Yadav quickly resolved the issue, all while the Indian captain observed him closely. Sharma’s expression suggested he wouldn’t have let Yadav off easily, even on stage.
Following the final, Kuldeep Yadav’s childhood coach, Kapil Pandey, praised Rohit Sharma’s leadership, emphasizing his effective use of spinners in the middle overs.
“This is a significant win… It was a team effort that secured this victory. Rohit Sharma deserves credit for his plan that led India to win. His strategic deployment of spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Varun in the middle overs was crucial. I advised Kuldeep to bowl with a relaxed mindset before the match. All four spinners performed exceptionally well,” said Kapil Pandey.
Sharma expressed his satisfaction with the team’s overall performance and the positive outcomes.
“Someone pointed out that we’ve only lost one game in the last three ICC tournaments. This is a remarkable achievement, demonstrating the team’s quality, depth, and internal understanding,” Sharma stated after the victory on Sunday night.
Sharma attributed the team’s success to their ability to handle external pressures. “There is immense pressure from outside, especially when India loses a game, leading to much speculation. However, the team has managed to ignore this and concentrate on winning and enjoying the game,” he added.
