Wigan Athletic has announced the dismissal of Shaun Maloney, a club icon, from his position as manager. The team currently sits 15th in League One.

Despite the sacking, the club issued a respectful and appreciative statement acknowledging Maloney’s contributions.

Shaun Maloney, who played for Wigan for four seasons (2011-2015) and was instrumental in their 2013 FA Cup victory, was let go after two years in charge.

Maloney returned to Wigan as manager in January 2023, succeeding Kolo Toure. He was brought in to stabilize the club during a period of turmoil, though he couldn’t prevent their Championship relegation in 2023.

Last season, Maloney managed to keep Wigan in League One despite an eight-point deduction imposed on the club.

However, recent results, including a 2-1 defeat at home to Reading, led to the decision. Wigan is now just six points above the relegation zone.

Wigan Athletic stated: “Shaun was appointed during an exceptionally challenging period in the Club’s history.”

“While he could not prevent relegation from the Championship, Shaun successfully led the team back to League One with determination.”

“Following a change in ownership in the summer of 2023, Shaun remained committed to the Club and helped navigate an eight-point deduction and a significant squad restructuring, ultimately ensuring League One survival last season.”

“During his time, Shaun and his staff provided fans with memorable moments, including an FA Cup match against Manchester United and victories over Bolton Wanderers.”

“Shaun also played a key role in developing young players, with some progressing to further their careers, benefiting the club.”

“However, the current League One season has not met expectations. Home form and performances have been particularly disappointing. Therefore, the Board decided that a change was necessary.”

“This decision allows the club sufficient time to find a replacement and plan for the future.”

Max Rogers, Maloney’s assistant, has also departed. Glenn Whelan, previously with Stoke City, will take over as interim manager.

Despite the termination, Wigan emphasized their respect for Maloney, stating he is “always welcome” back.

The club’s statement concluded: “The Board of Directors expresses sincere gratitude to Shaun and Max for their service, dedication, and effort to the Club.”

“We hope fans will remember Shaun’s managerial tenure and his playing career at Wigan Athletic fondly. Shaun and Max will always be welcome at Wigan Athletic Football Club and the Brick Community Stadium.”
