Australian captain Steve Smith dismissed suggestions that India had a venue advantage after Australia’s four-wicket defeat in the Champions Trophy semi-final in Dubai. The debate about India playing at one venue has been a prominent topic among cricket experts and fans. Questions about tournament scheduling have been frequent in press conferences. Following India’s progression to the final, head coach Gautam Gambhir quickly rejected any notion that his team benefited unfairly from playing all their matches in Dubai.

Smith also disagreed with the idea that India’s single-venue matches gave them an advantage. He believes India earned their win by completely outplaying Australia.

‘I’m not buying into it,’ Smith stated in the post-match press conference. ‘It is what it is. India played excellent cricket here. The pitch conditions favored their style of play, with their spin and seam bowlers being effective on this type of wicket. They played well, outperformed us, and deserved to win.’

After Australia chose to bat first, the match briefly echoed the 2023 final. Travis Head’s quickfire 39 off 33 balls gave Australia a strong start, suggesting a high score was possible.

However, Indian bowlers consistently broke partnerships at crucial moments, hindering Australia’s progress. Smith acknowledged that if they had sustained one partnership, a score of 290-300 would have been achievable instead of their final 264.

‘Yes, I think electing to bat was the correct decision. We had opportunities to score over 300. We lost perhaps one too many wickets at key times in the innings. If we had extended one of those partnerships, we could have reached 290-300 and applied more scoreboard pressure,’ he explained.

‘It’s clearly not an easy pitch to bat on. This square in general has seen a lot of cricket recently. It seems quite worn, which likely explains why we haven’t seen scores above 300 in the tournament here. We performed reasonably well, but needed slightly longer partnerships to reach closer to 300 or just above,’ he added.

While defending a target of 265, Australia gave India captain Rohit Sharma multiple chances, dropping catches in the powerplay. In the 26th over, Glenn Maxwell missed a significant opportunity to dismiss Virat Kohli.

Maxwell dived to his right for a one-handed catch attempt, but failed to secure the ball, allowing Kohli to add another 30 runs.

‘We dropped a couple of catches, and when you are trying to tighten the game and create pressure with 260 runs, you must capitalize on those chances. But that’s cricket, it happens. No one intentionally drops a catch. It’s part of the game,’ Smith concluded.
