Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram strongly responded to a fan on live television after facing criticism for his comments about the Pakistan cricket team’s diet during the Champions Trophy. Akram had previously criticized the team following their poor performance in the tournament, particularly focusing on their eating habits.
During a television discussion, Akram mentioned seeing a large plate of bananas for the players during a drinks break. He commented, “Even monkeys don’t eat so many bananas,” suggesting it was excessive and indicative of a lack of discipline. He contrasted this with the stricter approach of former captain Imran Khan.
However, a fan criticized Akram’s remarks online, calling his analysis “stupid” and irrelevant. The fan argued that the focus should be on cricket itself, not on players’ diets or “movie dialogues,” deeming Akram’s comments embarrassing.
Akram retorted sharply to the fan’s criticism, saying, “Sir, I feel for your kids. You must be beating them with sticks,” implying the fan’s criticism was overly aggressive and suggesting harsh parenting.
Even former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh also publicly criticized Akram for his “banana” comments. Singh stated that such remarks should not be tolerated and suggested strong action should be taken, even jokingly saying he would have sent the players home if he were prime minister.
Following Pakistan’s Champions Trophy exit, Akram clarified that he is not seeking a full-time coaching role with the Pakistan team due to existing commitments. However, he emphasized his willingness to assist the players and the board in other ways without payment.
Akram also expressed concern about the treatment of former Pakistani coaches like Waqar Younis in the past, stating he does not want to face similar disrespect.
Former opener Mohsin Khan, who has also served as interim coach and chief selector, echoed the sentiment that Pakistani coaches need to be given adequate time and respect to improve team performance. He pointed out the tendency of board members to blame coaches and players without showing patience or respect for local coaches.
